The Rebirth of Fat Friday

In 2009, I started Fat Friday. The intent was to remind myself each Friday of the fat I needed to shed. They say the first way to recovery is to admit you have a problem. Well, Fat Friday is me admitting my love affair with fried foods, chocolate, and calorie filled pop (or Soda or Coke or whatever you want to call it!)

My last Fat Friday post was October 30th, right around Halloween, and about 2 weeks before I found out I was expecting Annabelle. Incidentally, the post's title was "Fat Friday is boiling in a pot of goo..." appropriate not only for the season, but for its dismal success.

However, I have much more motivation now! Heart-healthy is HUGELY important for Annabelle, so we are making healthier eating important for the rest of our family too.

My husband and I have spent the last month and a half trying to shed the pounds that had plastered themselves under our skin and were being stubborn. We've done pretty decent so far. I've lost 14 pounds... and my husband has almost lost 30!

I could have posted a real picture...

But we're getting to the point where it gets HARD. The pounds are being stubborn, wrapping their legs around my middle and screaming, "I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE! YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!" And with holiday's coming up, I've decided that it's time for Fat Friday to be reborn.

What, exactly, IS Fat Friday?

It's all about ACCOUNTABILITY and ENCOURAGEMENT.

For those of us striving to shed a few pounds and become healthier humans, we start today at ZERO.

I love that word. Zero. Never did see the SIZE zero, nor do want to. But today, that's our number.

Each Friday, I'll check in with a verdict and new number, and a little tidbit of encouragement for the next week. The goal is, obviously, to get NEGATIVE! If you want to join me, feel free to post your progress number each Friday, let us know how you did, what worked, what didn't work, etc!

For those of you toothpicks out there, feel free to encourage me/us along! I, for one, need it!

Goals

Scott and I haven't set firm "goals" for ourselves. Mostly, we just want to be healthier and fit into smaller clothes:-) In the back of my mind, my mini-goals are my pre-pregnancy weights. I'm officially to my pre-Annabelle weight now that I've lose these 14 pounds.

I have another 9 to go to be pre-Gabby.

Another 15 after that to be pre-Lacy.

And still another 15 to be pre-Karalynn.

15 pounds after THAT... and I'd be pre-Scott weight.

I have no grand illusions that after 4 kids I'll be able to be back to my pre-wedding size. I'll be tickled pink to be pre-children size. But right now, I'm focusing on Step two.

Pre-Gabby:-)

Discussion: Anyone joining Fat Friday with me??? Hmmm... ya know we should take those before pictures, ya know where you stick your belly out as far as you can, so when we are nice and skinny and oh-la-la, we can have before and after pictures. HA HA HA! Okay, that might be stretching it a little...

I'm with ya, my friend! If I lose about 10 lbs, I'll be pre-Connor, 5 more lbs, and I'll be pre-Kyra. 10 more after that, and I'll be pre-Alana! So, I'll focus on my 1st step...the first 10 lbs. :)

I control my heart issues with nutrition and fitness so I'll be happy to join in and cheer you on! Personally, I have a goal to lose 25 lbs (pre-Bunny) before I treat myself to a new wardrobe of which I haven't had in 11yrs! Pre-wedding I was border line anorexic so I'll settle for pre-Bunny. Think raw fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grain everything! The pounds will shed :)

OK...I will join you as well. I didn't gain anything with Hope, but...big but (hehe), I am 70 pounds away from pre-Jerry (my first and the one I gained almost 100 pounds with). I will actually be happy if I could drop 50 pounds in the next year. I doubt I will get back to my pre-married weight...and I don't think I want to anyway.

What a fun idea, Krista, to foster encouragement and accountability here! And congratulations on those 14 pounds!!! That's awesome!

As you know, I've been on a weight-loss campaign myself and am down 15 pounds. Woohoo! Ironically enough, I'm starting a new Friday feature where I talk about healthy eating and fitness. Soooo, I guess everyone could visit your blog and "weigh in" and then hop over to my blog for some tips and ideas, LOL!

Oh, and one thing I found helpful when I hit a bump in weight loss was to do a drastic change for a short period. I went on a 10-day herbal cleanse to jump-start the weight loss and it resulted in another 7 pounds coming off. Sometimes our bodies just need to be fooled once in a while. :)

Have a great weekend!

I should have read this before I stopped at McDonalds on my way to work. I ate the hashbrown first. I would need to lose 32 lbs to be pre children weight! I would be happy with 10! It is so hard to lose weight, but I will give it try! When you eat think about it, is man made or God made. We need to eat more food by God. Body by God book is a really good book.

I'm in! I'm in! I'm in! Of course I was in on the last Fat Friday, and had to drop out because of Simon. In fact, if you remember, I told you I was expecting Sijo in a Fat Friday blog comment! LOL!

I have 130 pounds to lose, which is more than half of me. *sigh* My first goal is to say goodbye to the 250s.

WAY TO GO on the 14 pounds, KP!!! And awesome, Sarah Forgrave!

YAYAYAYAYAY!!!! I love Fat Friday! We will SO rock this!

Ralene... WELCOME to Fat Friday!!! I love using baby's as weight-loss goals, HA! Puts a new meaning to "baby steps"!

Lis... Good for you! A new-wardrobe is a fantastic incentive! (if I acheive my goal, I'll be forced to... as nothing will fit! Won't that be nice!?!)

Hope's Momma... I totally get the big but(t) HA! I gained 50 with my first, and only lost 30. My big kicker though, was Abigail. I miscarried her after my first, and when I am depressed... I eat. I gained about 15 pounds before I got pregnant with #2, then they just kept adding on with each baby!

Sarah... YEAH for 15 pounds!!! and I will TOTALLY hop over to your blog for those tips! You'll be the brains, I'll be the brawn (or something like that....)

MisMisWilson... Ohhhh, Mcdonald's hashbrowns! I think I gained a pound thinking about it! Monopoly does NOT HELP my cause this time of the year either!!!! *grin*

Val... I DO remember!! You also left me a cryptic "false positive" note on that same blog too... funny that I found out I was pregnant about a week later! Thus the demise of fat friday...

Karen... yeah! Welcome to the fat friday party!!!! (vegetables instead of chips, obviously, HAHA!)

I'm with you on the "Fat Friday" idea but I do not think I will be able to post every Friday. I know you understand this because I have 4 kids as well, and the littlest is an HLHS warrior. On top of that, I am taking college courses on line, transporting the kids to and from school, and fighting some pretty crazy health issues of my own. I need to lose weight to get some of these health things under control, like my high cholesterol (a product of 14 admissions in 17 months...) and my arthritic hips and shoulders. I am not a skinny minnie but most people laughed at me when I said I needed to lose 30 pounds, but it was true. I am 5'4" and did not like being at 160lbs. I have so far lost 14 in the last 2-3 months and working hard on the last 16! I will be praying for your success since prepregnancy weight is a victory for any woman! (except those like me who were a very unhealthy underweight....lol)

I would have to say that I am at the optimal weight for my body frame right now but I will pray for and support you all!!! I have never had to "diet" so I am not an expert but friends of mine who have (and are in the medical profession) have said that one thing that helps is to not keep a routine going, and going, and going. Sometimes it is necessary to break the "diet cycle" so that your body doesn't get used to it. That doesn't mean stop what you're doing it means changing the routine up every so often and for a short period so that you keep your body on it's toes. A friend of mine on the atkins diet eats carbs every so often (not in large amounts) so that her body has to keep working on shedding those pounds! I hope this is useful advice and, like I said, I am not even a novice at dieting. Just some advice I have heard others give.

ONE FURTHER NOTE!

For all you Fat Friday-ers... WEIGH IN TODAY! That way you can give us your number (hopefully a negative one!) next week!

Feel free to weight in at night today and in the morning next Friday... I find progress, even the artificial kind... helps keep the momentum going!

Id love to post encouragement! I'm currently a "skinny Minnie" that's trying to gain weight rather than lose the weight. If anyone has recipies of tempting food, I'd gladly accept them and tell everyone how they tasted and go up in weight.

Krista Phillips said...

Anon... I have a TON of fattening recipes I'd be glad to share! Wait about a month when I start sharing my Christmas goodie recipes...

OH the holidays are going to be hard.

THANKS for encouraging us and offering to gain weight... we'll be happy to loan you a few pounds!

Casey is a skinny minie too :p. But we still love her ;).

I'm in Krista. I need to lose... well, we won't get into actual numbers at this point ;).

Lets start with 20-30lbs* to get to pre-baby #4.

I need to hop on the elliptical every day - but tomorrow I'm headed to Tulsa for a book signing [Tina Radcliffe and Mary Connealy with special guest Ruth Logan Herne] - so start date will be Sunday.

Thanks, Krista!

*Would have to thinking and math to get the actual number. The old scale is about 12lbs lighter than the new one which is more like the doc's :p.

Yay for your 14 pounds. Awesome!

I'm a day late but blame that on me being half a world away ...
I'm seriously overweighted and I have no kids to blame so I feel guilty about it most of the time ;)

I'd be happy to lose 20 lbs ...
and I'm going to try!

It is technically, Monday morning (just about an hour after midnight) but I would love to be a part of the Fat Friday! I need to lose weight and get in better shape. I haven't tried since becoming pregnant with my first child over ten years ago. I was doing the First Place program then and discovered I was pregnant. I had went from a size 10 to a size 6 but that quickly changed. I would be happy to just get back to the size 10. I'll have a few less days to get my negative number but I will try my best with God's help and the accountability of my Fat Friday Friends!

Riete and Tammi...

YEAH for joining us!!! Late is better than never (and for those others reading this, join whenever you can! This is totally casual, obviously!)

Tammi... size 10 is one of my lofty goals too!

Can't wait till Friday to see how everyone did!!!

Count me in!! I started losing weight in 2010 and successfully shed 42 lbs.. Infortunately I've put back on 20 of those unwanted pounds... I find that for me it's all in a challenge.. I will count this as the challenge that I need to get back on the right track! Congrats on your 14 Krista and before you know it you will be in the 20's... I've been following your blog and Annabelle's progress for quite some time and you guys are consistently in my prayers. I will report back on Friday with my NEGATIVE number!
